Mountain Home Hunting Service

One of the best places I have been hunting is, Mountain Home Hunting Service Well lets start out with how this hunt came about, Ronny Poston and I, Needed to get away from the everyday chores of life and get out and get some meat for the freezer. We contacted Albert Pena for an Axis hunt in Liberty Hill TX. He contacted me and told us that the cost of the hunt had increased as the ranch owner wanted more for an Axis doe. With that cost increase of 50.00 per doe we started to look other places. I found Mountain Home Hunting had a added in the San Antonio Newspaper offering Doe hunts for 125.00 for Fallow, and Sika Does and Axis Does for 175.00 with a 150.00 per day Guide fee that David Lee will let you split between 2 hunters.

For the guide fee you get allot as David meet us in Kerrville and we followed him to the ranch, which was just east of Junction TX. We had the whole ranch to our selves and there is a lot of Game on this ranch. The first stand I had was a well-built box blind that had lots of room for two hunters. As I was getting in the blind I already saw game coming. There was Axis, Sika, and fallow does with lots of Whitetail deer and Blackbucks. This ranch has a large population of Trophy Axis bucks, As you can see in the picture this are just 50 yd. from me and there are lots of trophies standing there. After about 30 minutes of siting there in awe, I saw a single fallow Doe that was with out a Fawn that was moving in to the feed station. I will say that most of the shots at this ranch will range from 40yds to just over 200yds. So almost any good Deer rifle will work. So when the fallow doe got off to the side away from the other deer and Blackbuck I put a well placed Shot in to her Right Shoulder with my 300 Win Mag. Rick Armour in Cub Run KY built that.

I was using a 165-gr. Barnes XBT. The shot was at 121yds and she only went 10 yd. after getting hit. I called David on the radio and in about 5 minutes he was there and was taking the doe to be field dressed and cooled down. When I was waiting to see if I could get another doe, Ronny was in his stand getting entertained by lots of game also. I will let Ronny tell you about his day.

After waiting for about 45 minutes David was asking if we needed to move to a new stand location? So I elected to move to a new stand to see if I could see any other game. The stand he took me to was the Rock tank stand and from the time David had placed the feed on the ground to thetime he was driving off I had over 10 Axis Bucks and does, 7 Whitetail Buck and does and lots of Blackbuck does with a immature buck working the baited area. After about hour of watching those animals it was time to get out and find some lunch.

We followed David back to Ingarm where he bought us lunch and placed my doe in a walk in cooler. David is a Retired Navy man that knows his way around the hill country and the ranches he has. He also offers Trophy Hunts for Whitetails in South Texas as with in the hill country. After a great lunch, we had a bit of time to look around Kerrville and the general area. At about 2:30 we met back with David and he drove us back out to the ranch and placed us in Blinds that we hadn’t been in and the game was there all day long. At about 4:00 I had the chance to take a Sika and Follow doe and choose take the Sika doe that was a very healthy and large. This is where it got a bit fun I had hit her abit far back and had to track her but David was a very good tracker and we found her in a very short time. David and I went and got Ronny to move him to his new stand locations. After David Field dressing my doe, We went and got Ronny and took him to a new stand were I sat with him. Hoping he would see if he was going to take a nice Axis doe or not. Like I said I will let Ronny tell you about his hunt.

With all the hunting over and the day ending. We went back to David’s home and he then Skinned and quartered the does and put them on ice.

With this hunt over and everything I am planning to go back as soon as I can. I plan on taking my daughters on the next hunt as David Runs an A1 place that is interested in youth hunts and getting the young folks into hunting.
